Jax Style

February 13th, 2011

The past few days when I have been getting dressed, I have a little helper.  As I am trying to figure out what to wear, Jax comes around and pulls clothes off the hanger and goes, “Here, this one!”  He gets rather upset when my ideas are contra to his.

Do I have a new stylist?  Hmmmmm

And I might mention that he is not picky about his own clothes, although the other night he did stand on top of his dinosaur pjs announcing emphatically, “no dinosaur!”  When asked what he wanted he paused, thought a bit and stated “Robot!”

Life with son #2 is always interesting.

Nothing better….

There is nothing better to me than a good back scratch.  My eldest provided me one yesterday and it was wonderful!!!  This is what I had kids for!

It’s tough being a big brother

February 9th, 2011

Yesterday we were visting my mom and Jax had a poopy diaper.  I was getting wipes and diaper and getting ready to go change him.  Cam was insisting on the peach diapers (we just changed sizes and the color changed) and I couldn’t understand why he cared.  Come to find out, he cared because he was planning on changing Jax.

I went into the sunroom to find Jax laid down on the couch with his shoes taken off and Cam starting to pull down his pants.  He had him all ready to change.  I told him I would probably need to help and he got really offended.  He told me that he was his big brother and he was always careful.  When I looked closer at the diaper I realized it was a bad one and there was no way he was going to be able to change it without making a mess (especially for his first time).  Cam was not happy, but relented.  As I undid the diaper and starting wiping, I heard this odd noise.  I look over and Cam is making retching noises and covering his mouth.  I really thought he was going to lose it right there on the sunroom floor.  I asked if he wanted me to do it and he nodded vigoursly and ran out of the room.  As I started cleaning Jax up, Cam came back in and told me he was OK and then he started to wipe down Jax as well (rather aggressively in my opinion, but then maybe he thought he needed it.)  We got the new diaper on and Camden insisted on getting Jax’s pants back on.  Through all of this Jax just laid there calmly.

It’s a tough job being a big brother, but Cam is learning the ropes and is doing great!  But, I don’t think he’ll volunteer for diaper duty again anytime soon.

Running, sorta

February 4th, 2011

So I took this week off, but…..

I have started trying to prepare for a 5K.  Not a specific 5K, but one soon.  I am walking/jogging about 4 miles.  I am nearing the half walk/half jog portion and hope to crossover to the jogging/walking segment soon.  It is HARD and I know intellectually that if I just keep going I will make it.  My knees and shins and ankles don’t believe me.  But we’ll show them, right?

I need to get in shape and I need to lose some weight.  So here we go….  I’ll periodically keep you posted.  :)

Time Flies

February 4th, 2011

I cannot believe that it is already February.  The groundhog has spoken and cupid is quickly winging his way here.  And I have missed a couple of weeks of posting.  I know….

The reason is that I didn’t really have anything to post.  Well, at least not that I thought anyone would want to read anyway, but looking back, we have been busy.  It is just the ordinary kind of busy that makes up most of our lives.  So if I don’t appreciate the ordinary busy, then a lot of living is going to go by without applause.  And I NEED some applause.  :)

We have generally just been enjoying our time together.  It is the AHHH after the holiday hustle and bustle and it has been great to have Mike home before 6 every evening.  He gets home and plays with the boys and then usually gives them a bath and puts them to bed.  We then have our dinner and enjoy a roaring fire most nights.  I am getting really good at keeping a real fire going.  I love the crackle and sparks, but I think I vote for gas logs in the future.

We have started attending a local church and are beginning to get involved.  It is a big church so we look forward to making friends in our Sunday School – we are decorating valentine’s cookies next weekend!  We have visited both the Traditional and Contemporary services and enjoyed both.  The traditional is definitely more subdued and brings back fond memories from my childhood.  We will go to the contemporary when we need a jolt of high energy!

I have been busy this week and attended both a bible study and a MOPS meeting.  Both were wonderful and I got to meet some other moms.  Hopefully there will be many friendships formed and I will finally start feeling like a part of a community.  In both meetings (MOPS this week next week’s bible study) we are making homemade cards, so I am getting my crafty needs met as well.

The boys are growing and growing.  I asked Cam to stop growing because soon he was going to grow up and move away.  He told me that when he and Jax are in college, Daddy will have to take care of me.  Jax is getting more and more vocal and is very good at stating his opinions.  I told him to say he was sorry to Cam for knocking down his tower and Jax said, “no sorry”.  Well, there you have it.  I think that both of them have enjoyed getting to go to church and play with the kids as much as I have enjoyed meeting with the moms.  Camden has thanked me for getting him up so he could go to church and Jax just says “Yippe, church!”

We are also enjoying getting to know Madison and Huntsville more.  We have had a lot of fun at a local playground and walking trail the past couple of weekends.  The walking trail is 2 miles long one way and we hiked to the playground and back last weekend.  The weather was wonderful and the boys slept well that night.  We have been to the Space and Rocket Center (BIG ROCKETS!!! shrieks Jax everytime we pass them) and Sci Quest.  We are planning on going to Early Works Museum and Railroad Depot soon.  Huntsville is a wonderful town and I am so glad that we are here.

Well, that’s about all for now.  I hope we get some snow this weekend, even those most are grumbling.  I love the beautiful white blanket that descends on the town and I was one of the few who hated to see it all melt.  It did make my run/walks harder though, but the scenery was better.  So stay warm, drink some hot chocolate, and snuggle with those you love.

And WELCOME TO THE WORLD, BABY ADELLA!!!  Can’t wait to meet you.  Congrats T and L and welcome to parenthood.  If you ever need a babysitter….

Jackson has discovered Daddy’s new toy (his big iPod as Cam calls it).  I left him tracing letters on it when I went to check on the fire and when I came back he had changed games.  Where’d he learn to do that?

Hello Old Man Winter

January 10th, 2011

So the forecast was right.  We actually did get some snow.  ALOT of snow.  9″ of snow!  More in the drifts.  Our cars are covered, the snow is up to the middle of the hubcaps and the kids had lots of fun in the snow.

We were better prepared for snow play this time around.  At Christmas, not so much.  This time I had bought snow bibs and new WARM mittens.  The one thing we didn’t have were boots, but we improvised and it worked ok.  Cam immediately stripped down this morning and insisted on putting on his snow clothes.  This was pj bottoms (improvised long johns), fleece pants, t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, snow bib, sweatshirt, and 2 pairs of socks.  He then complained that he couldn’t bend over to make snowballs and that he didn’t like the sound the snow bib made when he walked.  sigh.  So off came the snow bib until time to go outside.

Then back on with the snow bib and plastic bags on the feet taped around the ankle to keep the feet dry and then tennis shoes.  Next scarf, hat, and mittens.  Same treatment for Jax, Mommy, and Daddy.  Finally….  we’re off.  Hard to get down the driveway when the snow is up to your knees (Jax).  Hard for all of us, so we follow in Daddy’s footsteps which are more or less following the steps.  Kinda hard to tell for sure.

First thing Camden does is fall down and make a snow angel.  Then we have a snowball fight (Daddy’s accuracy is not great unless he is only 3 feet away :) ).  and then build a snowman.  Soon Jackson discovers the tire tracks in the road and says Choo Choo tracks and takes off – choo choo chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug – and we all follow down the street.  Our own little Snow Stone Express.

We also try to sled, but our plastic box just bogged down and didn’t slide.  Oh well.  We had lots of fun anyway.  Back inside for some hot oatmeal and then naps.  We’ll probably see you again tomorrow, snow!

Camden comments

January 6th, 2011

Today at lunch Camden was telling me what he wanted for his next birthday (a monster truck Lightning McQueen/Mater) and that he wants a cake like the one from his last birthday.  I told him OK, but his birthday was a long way off.  I know, he says.  I then said that we’ll discuss it later when it is closer to his birthday and he can tell me then what he wants.  To this he replies, “I don’t need to do that.  I just told you.  Put it on your list.”  Sigh.

Then later today he comes in the bathroom where I am and tells me he needs to use my potty because Jax is still asleep and he doesn’t want to use his because it might wake him up.  I said ok.  He then gets on and poops.  While waiting to finish, he farts and looks at me and says, “Maybe that was a hiccup that came out my butt.”  Nice analogy.  Sorry about the scatalogical content, but this is my world and I graciously share with you!

Why Jackson Why?

January 5th, 2011

Jackson has finally hit the “Why?” stage and the “What’s that?” stage and the “What’s that way?” stage.  He has begun to talk almost as much as Cam every time we get in the car.  They compete to see who can ask the most questions.  At one point in time I thought that maybe Jackson would be quieter than Camden as he grew up because he used to sit so quietly in the backseat and watch tv or look out the window.  Well that thought or hope has disappeared.  He is growing up!  Yesterday he kept asking Mike “why this and why that” and I told Mike that he had been like that all day and that I was too tired to answer and usually told him “because I said so.”  (you know that thing you said you would never say when you became a parent….)  Mike getting tired of answering decided to turn the tables.  He asked Jackson, “Why, Jackson, why?”  To this Jackson promptly answered, “Because.”  smart boy!

He is really starting to develop his imagination as well.  I was up early with him this morning before his brother got up. An aside – he now actually calls Camden something that sounds like Camden.  He used to call him something that sounded more like Jackson to me and so a couple of weeks back he started saying Camden.  Camden was so excited and he said, “Mom, Jackson is big enough now to say Camden!”  Back to my story now – And Jackson was playing, really playing with his toys.  He got a rocket for Christmas and he put the astronauts in the rocket and made it blast off.  He asked me to help him open the wings and then patted my arm and said good job.  He is becoming a little boy and not just my curly head toddler.  It happens in a blink of an eye.

So enjoy your family and kids and appreciate the little things today.

How’d you do that?

January 4th, 2011

The other night as I was trying to start a fire in the living room, I hear a yelp from Mike in the kitchen.  Cam who was supposed to be in bed had snuck in there to tell him something.  I hear him telling Camden, “You scared me.  How’d you get past Mommy?”  Camden replied, “Watch!” and then proceeds to hunch over and start tip toeing.  “Like this Daddy…”  Mike just starts laughing.  Very effective!

Recently Jax had hiccups.  When Michael asked him where his hiccups were coming from, he opens his mouth and points.  I love the very literal translation that kids put on their answers.
